Biography
Ms. Joanne Smith joined Villa Walsh Academy in the 2023-2024 school year. She brings strong experience in the classroom as well as in sports. Ms. Smith teaches grades 9th and 10th Physical Education, 9th and 11th Health, and 10th grade Driver's Education. She is certified in administering the NJDMV knowledge test to our Driver's Ed students. She is also certified to administer CPR/AED/First Aid certification to our 11th grade. Joanne is our JV volleyball coach as well as the coach for our Middle School Spring Sports Clinic.

Ms. Smith comes from a strong teaching background. She previously taught at a therapeutic high school called Sage Day High School in Boonton, NJ for 15 years. This school provides education and therapeutic services to students with emotional disturbances in grades 8th-12th who are placed out of district. At Sage Day, Joanne taught Physical Education, Health, Driver's Education to grades 8th - 12th, as well as being the support teacher in many other school subjects. She was also responsible throughout her 15 years helping run Student Council, National Honors Society, Field Day, Staff and Student Activities and Events. She is extremely excited to bring her unique qualities and experience to our Villa Walsh community.

Before teaching, Ms. Smith graduated from Iona University in New Rochelle, NY. She graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Arts and Science in 2007. While attending Iona, she played D1 women's basketball for 4 years for the University under now Seton Hall University's head coach Tony Bozzella. After graduating, she coached D2 women's basketball for Felician University in Rutherford, NJ for 6 years as an assistant coach. She took a year off and then joined the girls' basketball program at Mountain Lakes High School where she has been since 2015 and took over the varsity program in 2018.

Ms. Smith was born and raised in Manasquan, NJ where most of her family still resides. Ms. Smith loves Villa Walsh's community spirit and the sisterhood it brings to the students.
